Georges Schwizgebel
Georges Schwizgebel is a Swiss animation filmmaker, born in 1944 in Reconvilier. He studied at the School of Fine Arts and Decorative Arts in Geneva from 1960 to 1965 and worked in an advertising agency before founding Studio GDS in Carouge, near Geneva, with fellow graphic designers Claude Luyet and Daniel Suter; there he has produced and directed some twenty short animated films.
His painted films, first made with rotoscoping and later with a freer gestural use of colour and frequent geometric constructions, have won awards at Cannes, Annecy, Zagreb, Hiroshima, Stuttgart, Ottawa and Espinho. 78 Tours (1985) and Ride to the Abyss (1992) are among the 100 most memorable animated films named by the Annecy festival in 2006, and The Man with No Shadow (2004), his first collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada, won nineteen international awards.
