Anna Samo

Anna Samo is a Moscow-born animation director based in Brooklyn, New York. She studied animation in Moscow and at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf in Potsdam, where she was a master student of Gil Alkabetz, and works as an independent filmmaker using analogue techniques such as hand-drawn and sand animation, paint on glass, stop motion, cut-out and pixilation. Her films, among them Obon (co-directed with André Hörmann) and The Man Is Big, have screened at festivals including the Berlinale, Annecy, Stuttgart, Animafest Zagreb, Aspen Shortsfest, Sundance and Palm Springs. In 2022 she co-founded Animation Speak/Easy, a screening and discussion series in Brooklyn.
