The Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival surveys independent film from Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Presented in Portland by the Northwest Film Center, it dates to 1973 as the Northwest Film and Video Festival and takes its current name in 2011. Its programme spans shorts and features, including narrative, documentary, animation and experimental work. Judges’ and audience awards accompany the screenings, and a Best of the Northwest touring programme extends selected films’ exhibition across the region.

The 46th edition is integrated into the 43rd Portland International Film Festival. Its announced dates are 6–15 March 2020; the organizer’s 12 March cancellation notice ends the remaining screenings because of COVID-19. The Northwest Film Center now operates as PAM CUT, part of the Portland Art Museum.

Awards and prizes

The archived festival conditions describe audience awards, decided by audience ballots at the end of the festival, and judges’ awards selected before the festival and announced in its printed programme. Judges determine their own categories and criteria, which vary between editions. Selected work also forms the Best of the Northwest touring programme. These are the festival’s historical award arrangements; no current award programme is announced.
