The competition is divided by genre rather than by documentary, fiction or animation: entries are submitted to one of five sections named after films, and each section is judged by two working film directors, who also choose its finalists. The first edition took place in July 2002 at Seoul Art Cinema, launched by director Lee Hyun-seung with Park Chan-wook, Heo Jin-ho, Kim Jee-woon, Bong Joon-ho and Ryoo Seung-wan and backed by Amorepacific's Mise-en-scène hair care brand. The 20th edition in 2021 presented invited programmes only.

The festival is organised by the association Next Directors and run by the film magazine Cine21. The dates for the 2026 edition are 18-23 June 2026 at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul, where 44 of 1,667 submitted films compete.
