The festival has taken place every year since 1997 in Montone, a hill town in the Umbria region of Italy, and its screenings are held in the old town. It grew out of a collaboration between the director Terry Gilliam, now its honorary president, the Umbria Film Festival association, the municipality of Montone and Riverside Studios in London. Evenings bring feature films under the stars in Piazza Fortebraccio. Amarcorti is a competition of Italian short films, and Shortsup is an international short film competition whose jury is made up of young people from Montone. Admission is free, and each year the mayor presents the keys of the city to a guest from international cinema.

The dates of the 30th edition are 15–19 July 2026.
