doxs! is a documentary festival for children and young people aged 4 to 18, held in Duisburg in the first full week of November. It dates back to 2002, when it began as the children's cinema of the Duisburger Filmwoche, and it now runs under the city's adult education centre (VHS). The programme draws on European documentaries in German or with English subtitles, with no length limit, and every screening is followed by a moderated conversation with the filmmakers. Admission is free for schools and accredited guests.

Two awards are given: the GROSSE KLAPPE, a prize of 5,000 euros for political children's and youth documentary, chosen by a youth jury of pupils from North Rhine-Westphalia, and the ECFA Documentary Award, chosen by a European Children's Film Association jury for films aimed at ages 6 to 12. The 25th edition takes place from 2 to 8 November 2026, with screenings at the filmforum on Dellplatz.

Awards and prizes

GROSSE KLAPPE: the award for political children's and youth documentary, endowed by the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung). A youth jury of pupils from North Rhine-Westphalia chooses the winner from the nominated films for the age group 12 to 18. The prize money for direction is 5,000 euros. ECFA Documentary Award: chosen by an expert jury of members of the European Children's Film Association (ECFA) from the European documentaries in the doxs! programme that are aimed at the age group 6 to 12. The prize for direction does not involve prize money. The award ceremony takes place during the festival in Duisburg.

Festival rules

The festival programme addresses children and adolescents aged 4 to 18. It is open to European documentary film and television productions in German or with English subtitles. There is no restriction in length. Films that were submitted to the previous festival edition are not accepted, unless they were withdrawn before the programme selection began. Productions are included that interpret the genre of documentary in an aesthetically demanding way, address the varied living environments of children and adolescents, and encourage young people's enthusiasm for documentary film culture. A programme advisory committee of the festival team, filmmakers, industry representatives, teachers qualified in media education and young people decides on the programme. Preview copies are submitted as an online screener or on DVD. Selected films are projected in the festival cinema in Duisburg and made available digitally to a limited number of schools and accredited guests. Each screening is accompanied by a moderated Q&A; entry is free for accredited festival guests and pupils. For an invited film, the sender pays the transport costs of the screening copy to the festival and the festival pays for one return shipment.
