The Montreal International Black Film Festival presents independent films from Canada and around the world about the realities of Black people. It was created in 2005 by the Fabienne Colas Foundation as the Festival du Film Haïtien de Montréal and has carried its current name since 2010. The festival operates in both French and English. Its programme brings together fiction features, documentaries, short and medium-length films and tributes, and juries award prizes for the best fiction feature, the best documentary feature and the best short or medium-length film. Beyond screenings, it runs the Black Market industry programme with panels and workshops, the Being Black in Canada programme, screenings in Montreal neighbourhoods and a pop-up market; recent editions combine in-person and online screenings.

The 23rd edition takes place from 29 September to 3 October 2027.

A selection committee invites films into the competition, out-of-competition, retrospective and other sections. Selected films cannot be withdrawn. Industrial, advertising and educational films are not eligible, nor are racist, pornographic, political propaganda films or films based on gratuitous violence. Submissions are made through FilmFreeway.
