Regional filmmaking from Hessen and the Rhine-Main area meets an international programme organised around a changing annual theme at LICHTER Filmfest Frankfurt International. Based in Frankfurt am Main, the festival dates back to 2008 and is organised by LICHTER Filmkultur e.V. Its regional competitions cover feature-length and short films, while the LICHTER Art Award explores contemporary video art and the VR Storytelling Award presents immersive work.

The Zukunft Deutscher Film film series and congress examine German cinema and its cultural and political conditions through screenings and discussion. The dates for the 20th edition are 13–18 April 2027.

Awards and prizes

The 2027 regulations specify a €3,000 regional feature-film prize and a €1,000 regional short-film prize, awarded to the directors by separate three-member juries. The short-film jury also awards the Filmhaus-Gerippte newcomer prize, a €500 voucher for Filmhaus Frankfurt training or equipment hire. An audience vote determines the €1,000 audience award; the closing film is excluded. LICHTER also runs the Art Award for video art and the VR Storytelling Award, with separate competition rules.

Festival rules

For the 2027 regional feature and short-film competitions, submissions require a connection to Hessen or the Rhine-Main region through the filmmakers, production, filming, post-production or regional funding. The regulations cover works produced since 2026, no more than one year old and without a German cinema, television or streaming release. Films in languages other than German or English require German or English subtitles. The online submission form and a screening link are due by 15 January 2027. Short films run under 52 minutes; feature-length films run 52 minutes or longer. Separate calls apply to the Art Award and VR Storytelling Award. Selected competition films must be provided without a screening fee. The submitter must hold the screening rights; withdrawal is not permitted after participation is publicly announced. Standard screening formats are DCP, HD video or Blu-ray. The full 2027 regulations govern participation. The festival may use submitted images and press materials for publicity and up to 20 seconds of selected competition films in its trailer. Competition films normally screen at most twice; additional screenings are permitted for award presentations and the final-day winners programme, while other repeats require agreement.
