Student animation shares the screen with independent and studio work at the International Animation Festival (FIA) in Montevideo, Uruguay. Organised annually by the Faculty of Design at Universidad ORT Uruguay, the festival selects animated shorts from around the world, including work by animation-school students and graduates and secondary-school pupils. Its competitions cover animated shorts, experimental animation, advertising films and music videos, and student productions.

Screenings sit alongside talks by national and international animation professionals and practical workshops for secondary-school students. The 2026 edition dates are 2–4 September 2026, at ORT’s Campus Centro, Cuareim 1451, Montevideo.

Awards and prizes

FIA 2026 regulations: Grand Jury Prize — US$1,000; Best Original Idea — US$500; Best Uruguayan Short Film — US$500. Certificates are awarded for Best Uruguayan Student Short Film, Best International Student Short Film, Best Animated Short Film, Best Experimental Animated Short Film, and Best Advertising Short/Music Video. If the Grand Jury Prize and Best Uruguayan Short Film go to the same film, the Uruguayan award passes to the runner-up in that category. The regulations state that the same rule applies to the Uruguayan and international student short-film categories. The jury may also award special mentions for outstanding technical or aesthetic achievements and may leave categories unawarded.

Festival rules

FIA 2026 rules: Animated short films of any genre, subject or country of origin created from 2022 onwards are eligible. Each filmmaker may submit up to six works, with a separate registration form for each. Works may be made for cinema, video, television or the internet. Maximum running time: 20 minutes including credits. Films must be in Spanish or English, or subtitled in either language, preferably Spanish. Works promoting religious, racial, gender or any other discrimination are not accepted. Competition categories: animated short film; experimental animation short film; advertising short/music video; student short film. Entry is free. The registration form must include a download link. The submission deadline is 1 August 2026; the official submission page now states that entries are closed. The festival takes place in Montevideo on 2–4 September 2026. Festival management determines screening order and dates. The organisers select the films and announce the selection at least one week before the festival. Jury members are animation and audiovisual professionals, announced at the close of submissions. Jury decisions are final; categories may be declared vacant. Participants allow the organisers to retain their works and screen them publicly or privately, provided screenings are free and for educational or cultural purposes. Films using pre-existing images or sounds are accepted; participants bear all responsibility for third-party rights. Submission constitutes acceptance of all festival rules. The organisers resolve matters not covered by the rules.
