Queer film culture and community organising shape the Hamburg International Queer Film Festival. Its international selection spans fiction, documentary, animation and experimental work, with feature-length Panorama screenings, URSULA short-film programmes and a Made in Germany selection. Guest-curated programmes bring perspectives from groups outside the festival, while discussions, workshops and school screenings extend its work beyond the cinema programme.

The festival traces its origins to a Hamburg University film seminar and the first Lesbisch Schwule Filmtage Hamburg in 1990. Querbild e.V. provides its organisational framework, and a largely volunteer collective develops the programme. The current name dates from 2021. The dates for the 38th edition in Hamburg, Germany, are 19–24 October 2027.

Festival rules

Queer short and feature-length films may be submitted free of charge through the festival’s online entry form, with a separate submission for each film. Entries include a synopsis, press materials and stills, director and production contacts, technical details and an online screener or download link. The form lists DCP, MP4, Apple ProRes and other MOV files as screening formats. Selected entrants must ensure that a screening copy is available during the festival and agree that supplied press materials may be used to present the programme. The festival does not accept responsibility for damage during transport. Material mailed from outside the European Union requires a declaration that it has no commercial value and is for cultural purposes; screening copies must include a pro forma invoice declaring a value below US$50. Successful short films may be selected for touring Best-Of programmes. Entrants must accept the published entrance requirements.
