Science documentary cinema sits at the centre of Academia Film Olomouc (AFO), organised by Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, since 1966. Its selection explores natural and social sciences and the humanities through feature documentaries, short films, television work and immersive media. Screenings connect with lectures, discussions and encounters with researchers, while current and former university students form a substantial part of the organising team.

The festival also supports documentary development through Camp 4Science and its industry programme. The 62nd edition dates are 27 April–2 May 2027 in Olomouc, with international, Czech and Slovak, short film, immersive media and European Spotlight competitions.

Festival rules

AFO 62 accepts science documentary films and series submitted by holders of the necessary audiovisual rights, with English dialogue or English subtitles. A series or individual episodes may be submitted, and the festival may select individual episodes. Entries are submitted through FilmFreeway. The official submission deadline is 13 December 2026. The Short Film Competition has a maximum running time of 30 minutes; immersive and interactive science projects are also eligible. The programme board selects the competitions. Selected applicants are notified before 15 February 2027; other applicants by 1 March 2027. Selected entrants supply a downloadable screening copy, English subtitles or dialogue list where needed, a director biography and filmography, and publicity materials including at least two stills, by 27 February 2027. Promotional excerpts of up to three minutes may be used. Submission permits two screenings without a screening fee, or three for award winners, at the festival or its official events. Selected entrants must provide a statutory declaration confirming their rights and authority to submit; failure to do so excludes the film. Immersive works permit free exhibition, with its number, duration and schedule determined by the organiser. Non-competition screenings require separate permission. Awards are decided by the designated juries; the audience award is determined by audience voting. Winners complete a statutory declaration covering the prize and payment. Personal data are processed under the organiser’s GDPR policy; consent may be withdrawn through the production office. Czech law and Czech courts govern the competition.
