Mirror Mountain Film Festival presents independent, alternative and underground cinema in Ottawa. A jury of filmmakers and local arts professionals selects short, medium-length and feature films of any genre, from drama and documentary to animation, experimental work, dance films and music videos, favouring unconventional and personal approaches. The Local Heroes programme showcases short films from the Ottawa-Gatineau region, and the festival also presents live performances and interactive media works. Submission is free for films shot or edited within 125 km of Ottawa and for festival alumni, and selected artists receive a screening fee. The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television lists the festival among its qualifying festivals for the Canadian Screen Awards.

The festival is run by a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2014; its first edition took place in December 2015 at Club SAW and Arts Court Theatre, and recent editions are hosted at Arts Court in downtown Ottawa. Between editions it presents screenings and artist talks with local partners. The 8th edition runs 27–29 August 2027.

Festival rules

Submissions are accepted only through the platforms listed on the festival's Submissions page (FilmFreeway, FilmFest Platform, Short Film Depot, Festhome, Click For Festivals, Toujiang); local and alumni films are submitted through the festival's own forms. Films of any genre and from any country are eligible. Short films are under 18 minutes, medium-length films 18 to 60 minutes and feature films over 60 minutes, including credits. Films with dialogue must be in English or have English subtitles. There are no premiere or completion-date requirements: films that have screened in the Ottawa region, have distribution, have been broadcast or are available online are eligible. Submission is free for films shot and/or edited within 125 km of Ottawa and for directors of films previously selected by the festival. Entrants must hold the rights to the film and its soundtrack or have permission to use copyrighted material. Selected films have their submission fee reimbursed and receive an artist fee; otherwise submission fees are non-refundable, and waivers or discounts are not offered.
