Minimalen gives particular attention to independent short films that explore visual form and film language. Its Trondheim programme combines Norwegian, Nordic and international competitions with retrospectives and focus programmes. A longstanding Norwegian one-minute-film competition places strict limits on running time, while dance-film competitions organised by DansiT and a regional student competition extend the selection beyond its main international and Nordic strands.

The festival dates back to 1988 and is organised by the registered foundation Minimalen Kortfilmfestival STI. It presents fiction, documentary, animation and experimental work, alongside programmes for children and young audiences and professional events. The dates for the 2027 edition in Trondheim, Norway, are 12–17 January 2027.

Awards and prizes

The international jury awards Best International Film: the Minimalen Trophy and EUR 1,000. The international competition also has an Audience Award of EUR 500. The Nordic jury awards Best Nordic Film: the Minimalen Trophy and EUR 1,000; and Best Norwegian Film: the Minimalen Trophy and NOK 5,000. Diplomas recognise Nordic fiction, documentary, animation or art films in categories other than that of the Best Nordic Film. The festival team selects the Raskin Spirit Festival Award from the international or Nordic competition for imaginative, compact, poetic filmmaking; the winner receives the Minimalen Trophy. Trondheim Kino selects a Norwegian short of approximately five minutes to screen before features for one month.

Festival rules

For the 2027 international and Nordic competitions, films must be produced in 2025 or 2026 and run no longer than 30 minutes. All film forms are eligible except commercials. Nordic entries have a Nordic producer or director; the international competition covers films outside the Nordic countries. Submissions are handled through FilmFreeway. Selected films require an English-language version or English subtitles and a DCP screening copy; an Apple ProRes 422 HQ HD file can be converted by the festival. Confirmed selections cannot be withdrawn. Selected directors receive personal, non-transferable accreditation. The separate Multiplié dance-film competitions have a 20-minute limit; Norwegian one-minute-film competitions have a one-minute limit.
