Vientianale pairs international cinema with a short-film competition for filmmaking talent living in Laos. Based in Vientiane, the festival dates back to 2009 and is coordinated by Lao and international volunteers. Its selection spans experimental shorts, fiction features, animation and documentaries, with free public screenings. The Vientianale On The Road outreach programme extends Lao film screenings and filmmaking workshops to schools and villages beyond the capital.

The 2018 edition dates are 15–18 March 2018. Its programme includes children’s shorts from KUKI, international animation and films from across Southeast Asia. The Lao short-film competition has separate main and new talent categories.
