Environmental Film Festival Albania (EFFA) connects environmental cinema with public discussion across Albania. Its programme combines international and Albanian short and feature films with conferences on biodiversity, climate change and agriculture. EFFA Lab focuses on environmental filmmaking from the Balkans, while EFFA School gives pupils a place to present their own films and environmental education projects.

The festival dates back to 2013, with support from the European Union and collaboration among Albanian institutions, embassies and environmental organisations. Urban Research Institute coordinates the main activities of the fifth edition with REC, IBECA and ASCS. The dates of the 2017 edition are 24–28 October 2017, with screenings at ten locations in Tirana.

Awards and prizes

The 2017 regulations provide for an international jury to award first and second prizes in each of three categories: short films, long films and EFFA Lab films. Awards may be cancelled if a winning film lacks permission to use copyrighted material.

Festival rules

The 2017 call accepts environmental films from filmmakers of any nationality. Its categories are short films under 20 minutes, long films over 20 minutes and EFFA Lab. Films previously programmed at EFFA are generally ineligible. Environmental subjects include waste, air, water, pollution, living conditions, green spaces and fauna; multidisciplinary approaches are accepted. EFFA Lab films must be shot in the Balkans and may be of any length. A film previously shown at another festival is ineligible for EFFA Lab but may enter the short or long film competition. Entrants must secure permission for copyrighted material. The 2017 application requires a viewing link or film sent by email, two images, an English synopsis and the intended category. Entry is free. The festival may subsequently screen submitted films in its Environmental Awareness programme in Albania.
