Children and teenagers judge the films at Giffoni Film Festival, with age-based Elements and Generator competitions at the centre of its programme in Giffoni Valle Piana, Campania, Italy. The festival dates back to 1971 and its founder, Claudio Gubitosi. Ente Autonomo Giffoni Experience organises the event, which presents international fiction, animation and documentaries for young audiences, alongside films about childhood for adults. Young juries award the Gryphon Awards; parents and other filmgoers judge dedicated short-film and documentary competitions. Premieres, meetings with filmmakers and guests, workshops and cultural activities complement the screenings. The dates of the 57th edition are 16–24 July 2027.

Festival rules

The latest published competition regulations concern the 2026 edition. These requirements are a reference to that edition, not a confirmed 2027 call. The competition accepts fiction, animation and documentaries relevant to children, teenagers and childhood. Elements +3 accepts animated shorts; Elements +6 and +10 accept features and shorts; Generator +13 and +15 accept fiction and animated features. Generator +18, GEX Doc and Parental Experience focus on childhood for older audiences. Shorts have a maximum running time of 30 minutes; features run at least 60 minutes. For 2026, eligible films are produced from January 2025 or released from June 2025, with priority for unreleased work. Features are excluded after an Italian festival presentation, theatrical release or television, internet or VOD broadcast in Italy. Shorts must be submitted through the festival’s FilmFreeway platform. Submission fees are non-refundable. Selected films require an original-language screener with English subtitles, except Italian films, an entry form, director information, English subtitle files, stills and promotional materials. Screening copies must match the submitted version. Preferred formats are DCP, H264 HD and QuickTime ProRes; encrypted DCPs require a KDM valid throughout the festival. The festival uses Italian electronic subtitles, with voice-over for Elements +3 and +6. Participants must hold the necessary rights and accept promotional use of supplied materials, the official laurel requirement and the festival regulations. The Italian regulations prevail in cases of interpretation.
