Run by the University of Málaga, Fancine connects fantastic cinema with university culture through competitions for features, live-action shorts and animated shorts. Its international selection spans fantasy, horror, science fiction, thrillers and related genres, alongside non-competitive screenings and educational activities. The festival traces its origins to a university film exhibition in 1990 and carries the Fancine name from 2008. University students form its Youth Jury, which awards prizes alongside the professional jury and audience. As a Méliès International Festivals Federation member, it nominates a European fantastic short for the Méliès d’Or competition.

The 36th edition runs from 10–17 November 2026 at Cine Albéniz and other venues in Málaga, Spain, in partnership with Festival de Málaga. Its theme is “Programados para amar” (“Programmed to Love”); no screenings or activities take place on 11 November.
