Short films form the cinema strand of the Festival dei Cinque Continenti, an itinerant arts event in southern Italy. Established in 2014, Cinque Continenti Film Festival uses international short filmmaking to encourage dialogue among cultural, social and religious identities. Its screenings use historic settings, including castles, cloisters, churches, palaces and town squares.

The festival is organized by the Venosa-based cultural association Il Circo dell’Arte with Artistica Management. Its competition combines audience selections at local screening stages with a professional jury for the final programme. Fiction, documentary, animation and experimental work are among the forms accepted.

Awards and prizes

The published regulations describe a festival prize consisting of a plexiglass sculpture by Italian artist Carlo Massimo Franchi. They also allow special prizes for films and individual contributions, including direction, production, performance, screenplay and music.

Festival rules

Archived 2016 regulations: entry is free and open to short films of any genre, style, budget or language. Films must be completed after 1 January 2012 and run between 3 and 20 minutes, including credits. Films in languages other than Italian require Italian subtitles. Previous festival submissions and awards are permitted. The published submission deadline is 31 May 2016; these are historical rules, not a current call for entries.
