International competition and a changing country focus anchor cellu l’art's short-film programme in Jena, Germany. Fiction, animation, documentary and experimental work sit alongside themed screenings, workshops, masterclasses and an open-air opening. The festival grows out of a media-student initiative from 1999 and presents its first edition in 2000. Its volunteer association, cellu l’art – Festival Jena e.V., also organises film evenings throughout the year.

The 23rd edition dates are 2–7 May 2023, with screenings at Kino im Schillerhof and Kino am Markt. Its country focus explores historical and contemporary Estonian animation, and its closing programme presents the award-winning films.

Awards and prizes

The 2023 edition offers Best Film (€1,000), Best Visual Design (€1,000), the Lichtstadt / Light City Award (€750), Youth Jury Award (€250), and Audience Award (€500).

Festival rules

The published competition regulations accept films of all genres and categories, up to 25 minutes, produced after 1 January 2022. Films may be submitted only once, through FilmFreeway. Individual student rights holders may request free submission by emailing proof of student status. Screening copies require English subtitles and Full HD H.264 MPEG4 files; a DCP may be requested. Submitters must hold the necessary rights and accept promotional use of excerpts and stills. Competition screenings do not receive screening fees. Entries are currently closed on the submission platform; these published terms do not announce a new edition.
