Animation by women and genderqueer artists is the focus of Tricky Women Tricky Realities in Vienna. International competitions and the Up & Coming strand sit alongside Austrian work, curated thematic programmes, retrospectives and discussions. Its programming explores feminist perspectives, political struggles, working conditions, queerness and resistance, including work that connects animation with documentary, new media and expanded cinema.
The festival’s first edition dates to 2001. Its organiser is Tricky Matters, the association responsible for the festival since 2026. The dates for the 2027 edition in Vienna are 10–14 March 2027.

Festival rules
2027 submission conditions
At least half of a submitted film must be animation, and at least half of its directors must be women and/or genderqueer artists. Male co-directors are eligible within that condition. A film previously submitted to the festival cannot be entered again. Filmmakers, producers and distributors may enter multiple films.
International Competition accepts films completed after 1 January 2025. Up & Coming Competition covers student films and a director’s first or second film after graduation, under the same completion-date and eligibility conditions. Out of Competition accepts older and recent works, excluding previous submissions. Its interests include political struggles, work, queerness, solidarity, resistance, feminist and intersectional perspectives, and the meeting of animation with documentary, new media and expanded cinema. Animated Feature Film is an out-of-competition submission category; the published call allows older works and requires at least 50% animation.
Submissions open on 17 July 2026 and close on 11 October 2026 through FilmFreeway. The listed notification date is 29 January 2027; the terms describe notification by the end of January. Each category lists a standard fee of EUR 1 and the listing is marked Waiver Codes Only. The official call provides waiver code twtr27 for applicants unable to pay.
Selected films must supply DCP, 35mm or 16mm, or digital files encoded as DNxHD/DNxHR, ProRes, or good-quality H.264/H.265. The screening copy is due on the festival FTP server by 5 February 2027. Senders pay transport to the festival and customs charges for physical copies; the festival pays return transport. Loss or damage compensation is limited to the material value, and a claim must be made within ten days of the film or hard drive being returned.
The selection committee determines programming, informs the director/contact before the festival and may place a submission in a different category. Submission authorises inclusion in competitive or non-competitive programmes. Applicants authorise television/internet extracts up to two minutes (approximately 10% for shorter films), or 17 seconds on Vienna public-transport Infoscreen displays, plus password-protected press access. Preview files, titles, credits and stills remain in the Vienna archive for non-commercial use and research. Competitive screenings carry no screening or exhibition fee; submission and acceptance of selection constitute agreement to that condition.
