Animated shorts, features and games share the programme at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) in Stuttgart, Germany. Its five film competitions cover international shorts, student animation, short films for children, nature and environmental themes, and animated features. Project competitions recognise animated games and innovative business models in the animation sector.
The festival dates back to 1982 and combines cinema screenings with free open-air films, filmmaker discussions, workshops and activities for children. Its professional programme includes masterclasses, studio presentations and work-in-progress sessions, while the GameZone offers games and interactive installations. Together with Animation Production Days and the FMX – Film and Media Exchange conference, ITFS forms Stuttgart Animated Week, connecting film exhibition with animation production and professional exchange.

Festival rules
For ITFS 2027, films are submitted through Shortfilmdepot by the rights holder or an authorised representative. Completed animated works finished after 1 October 2025, including computer animation and combinations of live action and animation, are considered. Short-film entries run up to 30 minutes: the International Competition, Student Competition, Tricks for Kids and Trickstar Nature Award. Student and graduation films enter the Student Competition rather than applying directly to the International Competition. Tricks for Kids accepts films for children up to 12 and one self-contained episode per series. Trickstar Nature considers environmental, biodiversity, climate and sustainability subjects. AniMovie accepts animated features of at least 60 minutes that have no commercial German release before the festival ends on 2 May 2027. Features primarily address adults; children's and teenage films may qualify through broader artistic appeal.
The short-film deadline is 15 November 2026; the feature deadline is 15 January 2027. ITFS charges €15 per International Competition or AniMovie submission and €10 per Student, Tricks for Kids or Nature submission, plus the platform's technical fee. Non-English dialogue requires English subtitles. Entrants provide complete credits, a synopsis, director filmography, dialogue and subtitle lists, stills and rights declarations. Use of generative AI must be disclosed, including its nature and extent; disclosure does not automatically disqualify a film. Selected films normally require a DCP screening copy, due by 5 March 2027. No licence fee is paid for competition screenings. The rights holder retains ownership and grants the festival the uses specified in the regulations; participation in supporting programmes and the Animated Video Market requires separate consent.
Animated Games Award Germany 2027 accepts completed games from developers based in Germany, released after 1 January 2026, for standard consumer devices. Entries close on 7 February 2027 and include access to the game, a gameplay video, concept and descriptive material, trailer and screenshots. Nominated games must be available for exhibition in the GameZone. The official regulations and submission forms govern participation.
