The festival is organised by Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián S.A., a company owned in equal parts by the San Sebastián City Council, the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the Spanish Ministry of Culture, Education and Sport. It is accredited by FIAPF in the "competitive film festivals" category, and its Official Selection jury awards the Golden Shell for Best Film. The festival dates back to 1953.

About 200 films are selected for seven competitive and six non-competitive sections, among them New Directors, Horizontes Latinos and Zabaltegi-Tabakalera. The works-in-progress programmes WIP Latam and WIP Europa, the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum and the Thought and Discussion area with Film Talks complete the programme. The dates of the 74th edition in Donostia-San Sebastián are 18-26 September 2026.
