Animation Nights New York (ANNY) combines curated monthly screenings with an annual juried festival, the ANNY Best of Fest, for animated short films and virtual reality animation from around the world. Founded by Yvonne Grzenkowicz, ANNY dates back to the “NY Independents” screening on 9 September 2015 at Fulton Stall Market in Lower Manhattan. Screenings take place in venues around New York City and online in the ANNY Virtual Events space; admission and submission are free, and submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. Every film shown in the monthly programmes, which run from August to July, is in competition for that season's Best of Fest, where industry judges select 20 winners as well as grand prizes for film and VR.

ANNY also presents a selection of 20 animated shorts at the Short Film Corner and Marché du Film in Cannes, and runs ANNY Exchange, an initiative that connects animation talent with work. The dates of the fifth ANNY Best of Fest are 13–20 November 2021, online.

Festival rules

Submissions are free and accepted on a rolling basis through FilmFreeway or the organizer's submission form. ANNY accepts animated shorts in any style, medium or genre, with no restriction on the film's age, as well as VR, AR, MR and interactive projects, including video games. Filmmakers must be able to supply a high-resolution 1080p digital file. Foreign-language films require English dialogue or English subtitles. Selection does not guarantee immediate scheduling. Films screened in the monthly programmes automatically enter the season's juried ANNY Best of Fest. Filmmakers are asked to attend the screening and networking event where possible. Entrants must obtain all necessary rights and clearances. Acceptance grants ANNY a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence for theatrical and non-theatrical screenings, promotional excerpts in print and electronic media, and limited broadcast and distribution across media and platforms at ANNY's discretion.
