On the Greek island of Syros, ANIMASYROS combines animation screenings with the Agora, its professional forum for developing and presenting projects. The festival dates back to 2008 and is organised by the nonprofit PLATFORMA – Urban Culture Company. Screenings centre on Hermoupolis, including the Apollon Theatre, with other venues across the island. Seven competitions cover international and Greek films, student work, television and commissioned animation, LGBTQI+ stories, children’s films and features.
International Panorama screenings and curated tributes complement the competitions. Educational workshops address different ages and include people with disabilities, while the Agora offers pitching, mentoring and discussions about production and distribution. The dates for the 2026 edition are 21–27 September 2026; its central theme is the bicentenary of Hermoupolis, with Ireland as focus country.
Awards and prizes
The festival presents eight awards: the Grand Prize for a professional short film, Best Student Film, the audience award for a feature film, Best TV & Commissioned Film, Best Greek Film, Best K.ID.S Film, Best Animapride Film and the Agora project pitch award.
Professional juries selected by the organisers decide the jury awards. For the feature audience award, spectators vote after screenings using ballots outside the screening halls. Awards are presented jointly to the winning film’s director and producer at the closing ceremony. Prizes may be financial or take another form at the production team’s discretion; the standing regulations do not guarantee a cash amount.
Festival rules
2026 film submissions
Animated films from any country are eligible if their first public screening is after 1 January 2025. Films shorter than 45 minutes enter as shorts; films longer than 45 minutes enter as features. The published regulations do not specify how an exactly 45-minute film is classified. Entries are submitted exclusively through FilmFreeway. The 2026 film deadline is 1 June 2026, and the published selection announcement is in August.
The 2026 entry fee is €3. Greek productions, Greek co-productions and films by Greek creators are exempt. Other fee waivers may be requested and are reviewed by the festival. Any use of artificial intelligence, including in animation, writing or storyboarding, must be disclosed; films using AI cannot enter the competitions.
Participants must have the necessary rights and provide accurate application information. Films that infringe third-party rights, including intellectual property, or contain racist, paedophilic, degrading or discriminatory material are ineligible. The discrimination provisions cover gender identity, racial or ethnic origin, religion or other beliefs, disability, age and sexual orientation.
Selection, scheduling and delivery
The production team determines the selection, programme and duration of the annual festival. A valid application does not guarantee selection. Screenings follow the festival schedule and may take place physically and, if necessary, through a digital platform. Participants provide a screening copy in the format declared in their application, together with the requested credits, publicity material and documentation by the festival’s deadlines. Digital files are preferred to DCPs or optical discs because of venue equipment. Festival screenings have Greek and English subtitles unless otherwise stated; the published submission regulations do not set out a separate subtitle-delivery specification.
Rights and responsibilities
Submission constitutes acceptance of the regulations by directors and producers and authorises the organisers to use excerpts or the complete film solely for festival publicity and archiving. Any other use requires advance consent from the director and/or producer. Submission also authorises publication of the submitter’s name and email beside the film in the festival catalogue. The festival does not pay screening fees and accepts no liability for loss of or damage to submitted audiovisual or other material.
Organisation
PLATFORMA – Urban Culture Company organises the festival. The production team has at least five members, including at least two PLATFORMA board members. Team changes require a decision of its existing members, and decisions use a simple majority. The team may cancel the event if circumstances prevent it from taking place. Financial and other annual statements are made available to interested parties after the event. Changes to the regulations require a decision of the PLATFORMA board.
2026 Agora Pitching Forum
The call accepts animation projects in development from directors and/or producers in the wider Mediterranean and Balkan regions, including shorts, features, television series, animated documentaries and cross-media projects. Applications go through FilmFreeway and include a PDF with a CV or brief biography, logline and concept, visual material and any supporting script, storyboard, treatment or teaser. Six projects are selected. The deadline is 1 July 2026, results are announced on 15 July, and the coaching workshop dates are 23–25 September 2026. Selected teams present their projects to an international jury and industry audience.
