The Venice Architecture Short Film Awards – What's Going On is a short film competition launched in 2020 by ArchiTuned, the association behind the Venice Architecture Film Festival. It was conceived as a series about how the pandemic changed public space, urban life and ways of living together, seen through cinema. Its first and only documented edition, What's Going On: Russia, focused on the contemporary Russian architectural and social scene and was presented with the V-A-C Foundation in Venice.

The online call, open from 1 to 25 October 2020, accepted documentaries, animations and experimental shorts, preferably up to 15 minutes long, from filmmakers, producers and students over 18 of any nationality. ArchiTuned and film consultants chose five films, which were screened at the V-A-C Foundation on 5 November 2020, and In Motion by Isabella Gallo was named the winner. No later edition has been announced.

Festival rules

Open to filmmakers, producers and students over 18 of any background and nationality; jury and board members and those involved in drafting the call are excluded. Films must address the edition theme and contemporary architecture in its broadest sense, preferably with a maximum length of 15 minutes; films produced after 2015 are preferred. Submission in MP4 (H.264) only, with the director's name, production company, three high-resolution frames, an abstract and the year of production. Films in any language; films not in English need English subtitles (.srt). Submissions via FilmFreeway, with a fee of 5 euros per film. Participants keep ownership of their work and grant ArchiTuned free screening rights and use of clips for promotion. A technical jury shortlists 10 films, and ArchiTuned with consultants and film experts selects the 5 best; the jury's decision is final.
