Vienna Shorts presents around 350 short films in competitions and curated programmes. Its four competitions are Fiction & Documentary, Animation Avantgarde, the Austrian Competition and the Austrian Music Video Award (MUVI). Its non-competitive sections include international music videos, films for children and young people, and comedy. The association Independent Cinema organises the festival in Vienna, where its main award winners receive newly planted trees dedicated to them instead of trophies. Three-member professional juries award prizes worth around EUR 30,000 altogether.

The festival provides qualification routes for the Academy Awards, European Film Awards, BAFTA and Austrian Film Award. Part of its programme also screens on THIS IS SHORT, the European Short Film Network’s streaming platform. The dates for the 24th edition in Vienna are 25–30 May 2027.

Festival rules

For the 2027 edition, competition entries may run up to 30 minutes and must be completed after January 1, 2026. Non-competitive entries may run up to 45 minutes and must be completed after January 1, 2025. All genres and formats are accepted. The Austrian Competition and Austrian Music Video Award require Austrian directors or producers, production partly in Austria, or majority Austrian financing. Previously submitted films are eligible again only after substantial changes. Rough cuts are accepted after picture lock. English subtitles are required, including for German- and English-language films. Entries are submitted digitally through Filmchief or FilmFreeway. The regular deadline is January 5, 2027; competitions alone accept late entries until January 31, 2027. Regular fees are EUR 5 for Austrian films and music videos, EUR 10 for non-competitive entries, EUR 13 for Animation Avantgarde and EUR 19 for Fiction & Documentary. Late competition entries cost EUR 10 extra; fees are non-refundable and platform charges may apply. A premiere is not mandatory, but films not previously shown theatrically or online in Austria receive preference. Public screenings in Vienna from January 1, 2027 through the festival’s end exclude a film from competition, except competition screenings at Tricky Women. Submitters must hold the necessary rights. Competition entries are also considered for non-competitive sections without a second submission. Selected non-competitive films receive screening fees.
