VAFI & RAFI separates animation made by children and young people from professional animation made for them. Its VAFI competition groups filmmakers by age, while RAFI groups films by their intended audience, from preschool children to teenagers. An international jury judges the young filmmakers’ work; children and young people judge the professional films. Blue VAFI recognises films in the VAFI section that promote children’s rights.

Creative Film Studio VANIMA organises the festival in Varaždin, Croatia, with screenings also in Ludbreg, Novi Marof and Ivanec. The programme includes animation workshops, lectures and exhibitions. The festival dates back to 2010. The dates for the 2027 edition are 17–21 May 2027.

Awards and prizes

VAFI has three categories based on the authors’ ages: MINI, MIDI and MAXI. An international jury awards one first prize and four equal second prizes in each category. First prizes consist of a statuette and diploma; second prizes are diplomas. RAFI has four audience-age categories: 0–6, 7–10, 11–14 and 15–18. Children and young people award one first prize, a statuette and diploma, in each RAFI category. Blue VAFI recognises VAFI films promoting children’s rights, with one first prize (Blue VAFI statuette and diploma) and four equal second prizes (Blue diplomas).

Festival rules

Only animated short films up to 20 minutes are accepted. The published rules require films made in the two years before the festival date. VAFI is for animation made by children and young people; RAFI is for professional animation made for children and young people. Entrants must state the authors’ ages and provide accurate, complete entry-form information; false or incomplete information results in rejection. Films can be sent online via WeTransfer. The 2027 submission period opens on 15 November 2026 and closes on 1 February 2027; the notification date is 4 April 2027.
