Its roots go back to 1968, when local film club activists proposed a film event for the city; the first Tampere Short Film Days took place in 1969, and the first international edition followed in 1970. The festival is run by the association Tampereen elokuvajuhlat – Tampere Film Festival ry and is accredited by FIAPF. Three competitions form the core of the programme: an International Competition for shorts up to 30 minutes, whose Grand Prix comes with the “Kiss” trophy; a National Competition for Finnish shorts and longer documentaries; and a Genre Competition for thriller, horror, sci-fi, action and fantasy shorts, introduced in 2021. The festival qualifies films for the Academy Awards, BAFTA and the European Film Awards. Curated special programmes add feature-length documentaries, archive and silent film screenings, and accredited professionals have their own industry programme.
