It began as a joint project with the German documentary festival DokumentART, then became an independent event under the name Szczecin European Film Festival, and has used the name Szczecin Film Festival since 2019. Documentary was its first focus; fiction and animation are now part of the programme as well. The flagship European Competition presents documentaries made with the involvement of European filmmakers, wherever they were shot. The second competition, West Pomerania & Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Shorts, shows short films by filmmakers from the regions on both sides of the border. Earlier editions also held competitions for music videos (POP SEFF), music documentaries (MUSIC SEFF) and films shot with mobile phones (Telefon ART). Retrospectives, film history lessons and educational screenings complete the programme.
