It is a competition rather than a film festival: its winners are honoured during the annual Ars Electronica Festival for art, technology and society, where they receive the Golden Nica statuette at the award ceremony and selected works appear in the Prix Ars Electronica Exhibition. The categories change over time; the 2026 categories are New Animation Art, Digital Humanity, Interactive Art + and the youth category u19 – create your world. Computer animation has been part of the competition since 1987. Today the New Animation Art category covers artistic computer animation, AI-generated images, scientific and data visualisation, animated documentary, VR and projection works, and its prizewinners are screened at the Ars Electronica Animation Festival.
