Founded in 2002 by Edna Campos Tenorio and Arturo Castelán, the festival operates through the nonprofit Arte Audiovisual Alternativo, A.C. Its competitions cover international and Ibero-American horror features, dark fantasy and science-fiction features, and Mexican, international and animated shorts. Macabro Lab provides workshops and professional training, while Macabro Coven supports women working in horror. The festival also coordinates the FANTASTIKA Ibero-American horror and fantasy coproduction forum and takes programmes to other Mexican cities through México Macabro.
