The event moves between host countries and forms part of the congress of Union Internationale du Cinéma. Its international jury discusses the films publicly and awards medals. Young UNICA gives filmmakers aged up to 25 a place within the national programmes, while the Minute Movie Cup puts films lasting no more than 60 seconds to an audience vote. The 2027 edition takes place in Cannes, France, from 31 October to 5 November.
