It is created by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, which also founded the Montreal International Black Film Festival in 2005 and the Toronto Black Film Festival in 2013 and brought the format to Halifax, home to Canada's oldest Black population. The selection is open to filmmakers of any background whose films deal with a Black reality or community or feature Black actors in major roles. The programme includes narrative, documentary and animated features, mid-length films and shorts, retrospectives and tributes, with panel discussions and community events alongside the screenings.
