Its juried programme includes animation, documentary features and shorts, experimental work, narrative features and shorts, student films, and Northern Plains Voices. The Art Deco theatre anchors the event, which also includes filmmaker conversations and panel discussions about filmmaking. The festival dates back to March 2001, following a Library of Congress film preservation programme at the theatre. Alongside its film competitions, the Ted M. Larson Award recognises sustained contributions to film education, production, culture, criticism, and history.
