Its core is the competition for animated short films of up to 40 minutes: the International Competition, held since the first edition in 1995, favours innovative and experimental work alongside auteur films and treats student films on equal terms, while the Swiss Competition and the Kids Film Competition were both added in 2009. The Kids Film Competition is judged by a jury of children aged 6 to 12 drawn from the Magic Lantern film club. The winner of Best Film in the International Competition qualifies for the Academy Awards short film categories, and Fantoche is on BAFTA's list of qualifying festivals for British Short Animation. Beyond the competitions, the programme includes animated features, games, talks and exhibitions. The Industry Day for professionals has run since 2014, and since 2018 it has hosted the Swiss Animation Industry Award for commissioned animation.
