It was founded in 2008 at the Stanica Žilina-Záriečie cultural centre by animation students of the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU), and the festival still takes place there, in the New Synagogue and in other venues across the city. It is organised by the non-profit association ANČA and has been a founding member of the Animation Festival Network since 2020. Each edition is built around a theme that reflects a social issue; past themes include utopias, women in animation, identity and propaganda. Films compete for the Anča Award in international competitions of animated shorts, student films and music videos, in a Slovak competition, and in a children’s competition judged by children. Winners of Best Animated Short and Best Slovak Animated Short qualify for the Academy Awards. The programme also includes the Student Forum for animation schools and Slovak Industry Day.
