Each edition has its own theme, such as climate change in 2022, women’s rights in 2023, cats in 2025 and the sea in 2026, and ticket revenue often goes to a cause linked to it, from tree planting to support for young women directors. The competition has international and Azerbaijani sections, with a Grand Prix for the best short animated film, awards for films for children and for animated TV series, and the ANIMAFILM Pitching Competition for new projects. Out-of-competition screenings, workshops and masterclasses complete the programme, and regional editions take the festival to Sheki, Nakhchivan, Lankaran, Ganja and other cities.
