It works with a broader idea of the short film than most festivals: its competitions accept works of up to 60 minutes in fiction, documentary and animation, alongside experimental films and music videos, and the programme sets contemporary work beside attention to film heritage. Besides the International and Portuguese Competitions, which share one jury, the festival runs the Experimental competition, Take One! for Portuguese film students, the audience-voted My Generation competition and Curtinhas, a competition of films for children aged 3 to 12 judged by a children's jury. Since 2021 its top awards qualify films for the Academy Awards; the festival is also on the Goya list, joined the BAFTA qualifying list in 2026 and nominates a candidate for the European Film Awards. The International Competition presents the Great Prize for best film and awards for fiction, animation and documentary, and selects the festival's candidate for the European Film Awards short film nomination process. The Portuguese Competition presents a Best Film Award; its films are also eligible for International Competition awards. Audience voting determines separate International and Portuguese Competition Audience Awards.

The Experimental Competition has its own jury of up to three professionals and presents a Best Experimental Film Award. Take One! has a separate jury of up to three professionals and presents Best Film and Best Director awards. Audience voting determines the My Generation Award. A jury of children aged seven to thirteen selects the Curtinhas Award. Monetary prizes and services for the 2027 awards are announced by the time the festival programme is released.

The Portuguese Competition Audience Award winner is nominated for the European Short Film Audience Award. The Portuguese Competition Best Film and Audience Award winners become eligible for nomination for the Ibershorts Award. The 2027 regulations also set out eligibility routes for Academy Awards, BAFTA and Goya consideration, subject to each award body's rules: the International Great Prize and Portuguese Best Film winners for the relevant Academy short film categories; qualifying British shorts under 40 minutes for BAFTA, including an additional listed festival screening and first festival screening on or after 1 June 2026; and Spanish shorts selected in competition for Goya.","The 35th edition takes place from 9 to 18 July 2027. Films produced in 2026 or 2027 are eligible. The International and Portuguese Competitions accept fiction, animation and documentary films up to 60 minutes; the Experimental Competition accepts experimental films up to 60 minutes. All three require a Portuguese premiere, excluding films previously screened publicly in Portugal. The Portuguese Competition is for Portuguese directors or films with majority Portuguese production. International and Experimental selection also gives preference to world premieres. Films submitted to an earlier edition are ineligible for every competition.

Take One! accepts films up to 30 minutes from Portuguese higher education institutions or Portuguese directors studying at higher education institutions abroad. Its selection favours Portuguese premieres and representation from different institutions. Curtinhas accepts films up to 30 minutes for children aged three and over. My Generation presents films for teenagers up to 30 minutes, with final selection and presentation by local school and university students; it has no open call.

Submissions use FilmFreeway, ShortFilmDepot or Festhome. The deadline is 30 April 2027, except Curtinhas, which closes on 15 April 2027. Submission costs are EUR 20 through 31 October 2026, EUR 25 from 1 November 2026 through 31 January 2027, and EUR 30 from 1 February through 30 April 2027. Take One! submissions are free. Platform charges are the applicant's responsibility, and submitted films are non-refundable. Films with dialogue in a language other than English or Portuguese require English subtitles for submission.

Selection notification is due by 7 June 2027. Selected applicants provide the requested form, a high-resolution still, a timed dialogue list where possible, and written screening permission from the director, producer or distributor. Screening copies are due by 11 June 2027 in DCP 2K/4K, 16 mm or 35 mm, with a ProRes or H.264 backup. Applicants without a supported format must contact the festival after notification. Portuguese and Take One! Competition copies with Portuguese dialogue require English subtitles; copies with other dialogue require Portuguese subtitles. Encrypted DCP arrangements require advance coordination.

Rights holders cover delivery of film copies to the festival; the festival covers their return. Digital copies use the festival's file-sharing service. No screening fee is paid for competition films. The festival may use trailers or excerpts of up to 10% of a selected film for promotion on television, its website or social media. Participation in subsequent touring screenings and retention of a screening copy require authorisation on the selection form. The festival board decides matters not covered by the regulations.","https://festival.curtas.pt/",[48,52,55,59,63
"Email","info@curtas.pt","General enquiries
"submissions@curtas.pt","Competitions coordination and film submissions
"Website","https://filmfreeway.com/curtasviladoconde","Film submissions (FilmFreeway)
"Phone","+351 252 646 516","Festival office
"Address","Praça José Régio, 110-1, 4480-718 Vila do Conde, Portugal",1792316523]
